How to Pump at BBQs, Pool Parties, and Summer Events
Summer means:
- BBQs
- pool parties
- family cookouts
- road trips
- and somehow trying to figure out how to pump through all of it.
Because let’s be honest — pumping away from home takes some planning.
You’re trying to:
- remember pump parts
- keep milk cold
- stay hydrated
- pump on schedule
- manage naps
- make sure your baby has what they need
- and still attempt to enjoy yourself
Which… is a lot. But the good news is that you absolutely can enjoy summer parties and still keep your pumping routine going. You just need a little strategy.
So whether you’re heading to a BBQ, family cookout, pool party, or road trip, here are my real-life pumping tips to make the day feel way less stressful.

Pump on the Way There
If you’re driving somewhere, use the car ride to your advantage. Honestly, car pumping sessions are sometimes the BEST pumping sessions because you’re already sitting there anyway.
And even if you’re pumping a little earlier than normal, every time you pump, you basically restart your pump clock. So instead of showing up already thinking about when you need to disappear and pump again, you’ve usually bought yourself another few hours.
That means:
- more time to eat
- more time to socialize
- more time to actually relax a little
Or at least as much as anyone relaxes at a family BBQ with children running around.

Wearables Are the MVP of Summer
This is where wearable pumps really come in clutch.
You can:
- walk around
- eat
- hold your baby
- socialize
- chase toddlers
- help with food
- and still pump
But also? Sometimes your pump break is also just a great excuse to disappear inside for 20 minutes of air conditioning and silence.
My current favorite wearable right now is the Momcozy Air 1 (discount code MOWTP15F). It’s slim, comfortable, and as discreet as a motor shoved into your bra can realistically be.
Now, do I think wearables fully replace a strong primary pump for everyone? No.
But for:
- summer outings
- road trips
- parties
- busy weekends
…they can make pumping SO much easier.
Do a Quick Pump Bag Check Before Leaving
Before you head out the door, take two minutes and check your bag. Because realizing you forgot milk storage bags halfway through a pumping session is not a fun surprise.
A few things I always recommend bringing:
- pump parts
- wipes
- a wet/dry bag
- storage bags or bottles
- ice packs
- a cooler or breastmilk chiller (check my comparison here)
One of my favorite pumping coolers actually has two compartments and fits my pump too, which makes life significantly easier during long outings. I also keep my parts cold with an ice pack between sessions so I don’t need to wash them every single time while I’m out. Basically the fridge hack… on the go.
And listen — if you forget something? You’ll survive.
Pumping moms are resourceful. You can absolutely pump into a Ziplock bag in an emergency. Is it ideal? No. But we’ve all been there.

Yes, You Can Have a Drink
I need more pumping moms to hear this: you do NOT need to panic over having one drink at a summer party. And no - you do NOT automatically need to pump and dump.
A few simple things to know:
- alcohol levels peak around 30–60 minutes after drinking
- if you want to be extra cautious, pump or nurse before drinking
- waiting around 2 hours after one drink can reduce alcohol levels further
And one of the most common phrases used in lactation is:
“If you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to nurse or pump.”
You are still allowed to enjoy yourself.
Give Yourself Some Grace
This is the part I really want moms to remember.
It’s a holiday weekend. It’s real life. Schedules get thrown off.
If:
- you pump a little late
- your wearable leaves a little milk behind
- you miss one session
- your baby eats off schedule
- things don’t go perfectly
…it’s okay.
One imperfect day is not going to destroy your supply.
I think moms put SO much pressure on themselves to make every pumping session perfect, every outing perfectly timed, every cooler packed perfectly.
Meanwhile you’re trying to enjoy your life too.
Your supply is more resilient than you think.
Just get back on track tomorrow.

Final Thoughts
Pumping during summer events definitely takes some planning, but it does not mean you have to miss out on all the fun.
A little preparation goes a long way.
And honestly? Sometimes the goal is not perfection. Sometimes the goal is simply:
- remembering your pump
- keeping the milk cold
- feeding your baby
- and making it through the day without losing your mind
That counts too.
So charge your wearable, throw snacks in your bag, grab your cooler, and enjoy the BBQ.
You’re doing a great job.
