Can You Fast While Breastfeeding?

If you're planning to fast for religious reasons while breastfeeding or pumping, you're probably asking yourself a lot of questions.

Will fasting hurt my milk supply?

Should I pump differently?

Do I need to build a freezer stash beforehand?

Should I spend the day before drinking as much water as humanly possible?

(Take a deep breath... you don't need to carry around a gallon water jug and panic-drink your way into your fast. )

The truth is, every breastfeeding journey is different, and there isn't one answer that fits every mom. Your baby's age, your milk supply, your health, and your religious observance all play a role.

If you're planning to fast, here are a few things I'd keep in mind.

Talk With Your Rabbi (Or Religious Leader) First

If you're fasting for religious reasons, your first conversation should be with your Rabbi or religious leader.

Many religious traditions recognize that breastfeeding mothers have unique circumstances, and there may be exemptions or accommodations depending on your situation.

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Every mother's situation is different.

Start Hydrating Before Your Fast Begins

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that you need to "catch up" on hydration right before your fast starts.

Thankfully, it doesn't work that way.

Instead of drinking huge amounts of water the hour before your fast begins, try to be intentional about hydration in the day or two leading up to it.

Sip water consistently throughout the day rather than trying to cram it all in at once.

If electrolytes are already part of your routine, they can also be a helpful addition before and after your fast.

Some of my favorite hydration products include:

Everyone has their favorite, but the goal is simple: head into your fast well hydrated - not trying to play catch-up.

Have A Backup Feeding Plan

Some moms notice very little change in their milk supply while fasting.

Others notice a temporary decrease.

Every body responds differently.

If it helps ease your mind, consider having a backup plan before your fast begins.

That might include:

  • Expressing a little extra milk in the days before
  • Having frozen milk available if you have it
  • Having formula available if that's part of your feeding plan

Hopefully you won't need it—but having a plan can help reduce stress.

Continue Removing Milk As Normally As Possible

If you're exclusively pumping, try to stay as close to your normal pumping schedule as your observance allows.

If you're nursing, continue feeding your baby on demand.

Consistent milk removal remains one of the most important ways to support your milk supply.

If you're unsure how pumping fits within your religious observance, that's another great question to discuss with your Rabbi ahead of time.

Don't Panic If Your Output Looks Different

It's completely understandable to feel nervous if you notice a temporary decrease in pump output after fasting.

Remember:

Pump output can fluctuate for many reasons.

Hydration, stress, sleep, and nutrition can all affect what you see in the bottle.

For many moms, getting back to their usual routine, rehydrating, and eating balanced meals helps things return to normal.

One lower pumping session doesn't automatically mean you've permanently lost your supply.

When Should You Seek Additional Support?

If you're noticing a significant or ongoing decrease in milk supply, your baby isn't transferring milk well, or you're unsure how to navigate fasting with your breastfeeding goals, don't hesitate to reach out for support.

Sometimes a few small adjustments can make a big difference.

And remember, your plan should always be based on your baby, your body, and your goals—not someone else's experience online.

The Bottom Line

Fasting while breastfeeding or pumping isn't one-size-fits-all.

For some moms, fasting has little impact.

For others, it may require adjustments or even a different plan altogether.

The most important thing is preparing ahead of time, staying as hydrated as possible leading up to your fast, continuing to remove milk consistently, and giving yourself grace.

Your feeding journey doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

And you don't have to navigate it alone.
