Zomee Z2 Shabbat Mode Review: Is It a Good Breast Pump for Shabbos?

Is this pump right for Shabbos? Our Zomee Z2 Shabbat Mode review covers how it works, key features, and what to know before choosing it.

If you're an observant Jewish mom who needs to pump on Shabbos, choosing a breast pump isn't only about suction, comfort, or portability.

You also need to figure out how you're actually going to pump on Shabbos.

That's what originally made the Zomee Z2 with Shabbat Mode so exciting to me. When I first reviewed this pump, there weren't many straightforward options designed specifically for pumping on Shabbos, and having a pump that could be programmed ahead of time was a BIG deal.

So, can the Zomee Z2 work as your primary breast pump? Yes.

Would I personally choose it as my only pump? Probably not.

And is it a good option specifically for Shabbos? Yes—and that's where I think this pump really shines.

There's also an important update since I originally recorded this review: Zomee has since released the Mother's Nature H1. At the time I filmed my Z2 review, the H1 hadn't been released yet.

If you're shopping for a pump today and want one pump that I would choose as both a primary pump AND for Shabbos, I would look at the H1 first.

But the Z2 still has a place, especially if you already own one or you're comparing your options. So let's get into it.

My Zomee Z2 Review: The Quick Version

Here's what I want you to know before anything else:

The Zomee Z2 emptied me effectively.

And that's important.

When I'm evaluating whether a breast pump can be considered a primary pump, one of the biggest things I'm looking at is whether it can effectively remove milk. Every time I used the Z2, I felt empty afterward.

So yes, I would consider the Z2 capable of being used as a primary pump.

My issue wasn't effectiveness.

It was comfort.

The Z2 has an alternating suction pattern, meaning it pulls from one breast and then the other instead of pulling from both simultaneously. Personally, I found the sensation a little more mechanical than I prefer.

I didn't hate it.

But I didn't love it enough that I would personally want to use it for every single pumping session as an exclusive pumper.

That's an important distinction because a pump can be effective without being the right pump for you.

And another mom may love the way the Z2 feels.

Who Would I Recommend the Zomee Z2 For?

I think the Z2 makes the most sense for someone who:

  • Specifically needs a pump with Shabbat Mode
  • Wants a pump capable of effective milk removal
  • Doesn't mind alternating suction
  • Already owns the Z2 and wants to use it for Shabbos
  • Wants a dedicated Shabbos pump while using another primary pump during the week

If you don't need Shabbat Mode, the Z2 isn't currently at the top of my personal pump recommendation list.

It's a good pump.

But what makes this particular model stand out to me is its Shabbat functionality.

How Does the Zomee Z2 Shabbat Mode Work?

The Shabbat Mode allows you to program your pumping schedule before Shabbos begins.

You can preset things like how long each pumping session should last and how many hours apart your sessions should be. Once everything has been prepared and programmed according to the manufacturer's instructions, the pump can operate automatically at those predetermined intervals without requiring you to manually start each session.

And as someone who has used other Shabbos pumping setups, I appreciate how much simpler having this functionality built directly into the pump can be.

Need to Pump on Shabbos?

If you need to maintain your pumping schedule on Shabbos, there are a few different setups and considerations to know about before Friday night.

I've put together a FREE Pumping on Shabbos Guide that walks you through the pumping side of the equation, the different options you may want to consider, and the information you'll want to have when speaking with your rabbi about what works for your situation.

Zomee Z2 vs. Spectra + SwitchBot for Shabbos

Before pumps with a dedicated Shabbat Mode were available, one option I used was a Spectra paired with a SwitchBot to automate pumping sessions.

And it can work. If you have the Spectra and can't get another pump, a set-up like this can work for you.

But after using both setups, I found the Z2's built-in Shabbat Mode much easier.

With the SwitchBot, there are additional pieces to set up and troubleshoot. The SwitchBot I used only allowed five timers, which meant that if you needed more than five pumping sessions within 24 hours, you could potentially need a second one. I also found that it could pop off and be a little finicky.

With the Z2, the Shabbos functionality is built into the pump itself.

That simplicity is a major advantage.

However, there's another side to this comparison:

I personally prefer the feel of the Spectra as a pump.

So when I originally reviewed the Z2, my recommendation depended heavily on your budget and whether you could reasonably have two pumps.

If you could only get one pump through insurance, I might have chosen the pump I preferred for everyday pumping and used an alternate Shabbos setup.

If you could have two pumps, the Z2 made a lot of sense as a dedicated Shabbos option.

Today, however, we have another choice.

UPDATE: The Zomee H1 Changes My Recommendation

When I filmed my original Zomee Z2 review, the Zomee Mother's Nature H1 had not been released yet.

That's important context if you're reading this review today.

Zomee has since released the H1, its newer hospital-grade pump with Shabbat Mode.

And if someone came to me today and said:

"Tamari, I want one pump that can be my primary pump during the week AND work for me on Shabbos. Which Zomee should I look at?"

I'm sending them to the H1 first.

The H1 gives you more flexibility in how you pump, including independent controls for each breast and multiple pumping patterns. More importantly, I prefer it as an everyday primary pump.

That means you no longer necessarily have to choose between the pump you prefer during the week and the pump that's easier to use on Shabbos.

That doesn't suddenly make the Z2 a bad pump.

It simply means you have more options now than we did when I originally made this review.

And I'm always going to give you my current recommendation rather than tell you to buy something simply because I reviewed it first.

There's a lot of nuance to choosing a pump for Shabbos, and sometimes it's easier to hear me talk through all of it than read another 1,500 words about breast pumps. 😂

In my original video, I walk you through my experience with the Z2, how the Shabbat Mode works, how it compares to using my Spectra with a SwitchBot, and the different situations where I would—or wouldn't—choose it.

A VERY Important Note About "Kosher" Breast Pumps and Shabbos

This is where I want to be careful.

Zomee has obtained certification for the Shabbat Mode on its pumps and provides specific instructions for how that functionality should be prepared and used.

But I am a Certified Lactation Counselor.

I am not your rabbi.

There can be nuances surrounding your specific circumstances, how your equipment is prepared, how you're pumping, how pumped milk is handled, and the halachic guidance you personally follow.

It's also worth remembering that your rabbi may not necessarily know the ins and outs of breast pumps, maintaining milk supply, exclusive pumping, or your particular pumping routine.

That's one of the reasons I created my Shabbos pumping guide.

It gives you the pumping information you need so that you can have a more informed conversation with your rabbi about your specific situation.

Please don't take a breast pump review—even mine—as a blanket halachic ruling for every Jewish mom in every situation. Read the manufacturer's current Shabbat Mode instructions and certification information, understand how the system is designed to work, and ask your own halachic authority when you need guidance for your particular situation.

Do You Have to Dump Milk Pumped on Shabbos?

This is another area where I've heard moms receive conflicting information.

You may have heard at some point that if you pump on Shabbos, the milk automatically has to be discarded.

Don't make feeding or milk-supply decisions based solely on something you heard years ago.

How you pump, the system you're using, your individual circumstances, and the halachic guidance you follow can all matter.

I'm not going to make a blanket ruling here about whether a particular mom can or cannot use milk pumped on Shabbos.

What I do want is for you to understand your pumping needs, know what options exist, and have the information you need to ask the right questions.

So, Is the Zomee Z2 With Shabbat Mode Worth It?

If you're specifically looking for a pump to use on Shabbos, yes. I think the Z2 is a very good option.

It emptied me effectively, the Shabbat Mode is significantly easier than some of the workaround systems I've used, and I love that observant moms finally have pumps being designed with this need in mind.

Would I personally choose the Z2 as my only pump today?

Probably not.

The alternating suction wasn't my favorite sensation, and comfort matters when you're pumping multiple times every single day.

If I already owned and loved another primary pump, I could absolutely see keeping the Z2 specifically for Shabbos.

But if I were starting from scratch today and wanted one pump that could serve as my primary pump throughout the week AND give me a dedicated Shabbat Mode, I'd look at the newer Zomee H1 first.

Mother's Nature H1 by Zomee Breast Pump Review

That's why choosing a breast pump is rarely as simple as asking:

"Is this a good pump?"

The better questions are:

How often are you pumping?

Are you exclusively pumping or primarily nursing?

Do you need Shabbat Mode?

What suction pattern feels comfortable to your body?

Do you need one pump to do everything, or can you have a primary pump plus a secondary option?

Those answers can completely change which pump I recommend.
