10+ Essentials For Baby Registry

Baby registries are a fun yet valuable way to let your loved ones know what you need and want for your bundle of joy. However, with so many options to choose from, it can become a little overwhelming to decide which items to add to your baby registry list.

That’s why I’m sharing a helpful round-up of essential items for your baby registry. This way, you can ensure that you have everything you need to welcome your child home.

10+ Essentials For Baby Registry

Creating your baby registry can feel like a big task, I get it. But once you understand the key items to include, it becomes way easier. In this post, we’re going to take a look at what a baby registry is, how it works, and the must-have items to include on yours. Whether you’re a first-time parent or just need a refresher for your next bubba, this list will help you create the ultimate baby registry checklist!

What Is A Baby Registry?

A baby registry is a list of items that expecting parents create to share with friends and family, so that they know exactly which gifts you need. From onesies and bottles to high chairs and car seats, it’s a simple way to make sure that you get everything you need for your baby! (Because, let’s face it, all the necessities add up fast!)

Registries can easily be set up at a particular store/retailer (like Amazon Baby Registry) or universal platform like Babylist where loved ones can pick out items that will be shipped directly to you. Not only does it make gift giving much simpler for your loved ones, but it also ensures that you’re completely prepared for the baby's arrival and don’t receive a bunch of duplicate products. It’s a tasteful, organized, and super efficient way of receiving support from your village!

How Do Baby Registries Work?

Step One: Browse and choose a registry platform.

To start, choose where you want to create a baby registry. Online platforms like Amazon Baby Registry are a popular choice due to the variety of products available and perks like completion discounts. However, platforms like Babylist allow you to add products from multiple retailers onto one list.

Once you select a platform, create an account and add all the information it’s asking for. The platform will ask for things like your address and the baby’s due date, which will be important for relatives and friends who want to send you gifts easily through the registry! Some platforms even allow you to select whether you want to be notified by purchases or keep it a surprise.

Step Two: Add items.

Once you’ve set up your registry, you simply add the items you’d like or need. Start with the essentials and then build out the registry with the nice-to-haves! You can even add things like cash funds (like for diapers or childcare) or a meal train sign-up that make it even easier for your family and friends to support you however they feel led!

Step Three: Organize your registry and mark your must-haves.

Once your registry is created and everything is in there, it’s time to organize the items. Categorize the gear into sections (feeding, sleeping, traveling, clothing, etc.) This will allow your guests to easily find what they’re looking for! Also, if the platform allows you to mark “must-haves,” make sure you do that. This way, your loved ones will prioritize the things you need the most before grabbing the nice-to-haves.

Step Four: Share the registry with family and friends.

After you create your registry, it’s time to share it with your friends and family. This can simply be done through baby shower invites or a direct registry link. Sharing your registry helps to ensure that everyone knows what to get and that you receive what you actually need.

Step Five: Purchase the remaining items you need.

Pretty much all these online retailers offer completion discounts, meaning you can purchase remaining items at a reduced price as you get nearer to your due dates. It’’s a budget-friendly way to get gear you don’t receive at your baby shower or other events!

Bonus Tip: Even if you don’t receive and buy every item, keep the registry open and resend links at the next holiday (like Christmas) or at your child’s first birthday!

What Are Must Have Baby Registry Items?

Breast Pump

A breast pump is definitely an essential if you plan to breastfeed (which includes both pumping and nursing). The right pump can help you increase your supply, empty between nursing, improve your nursing experience, and store milk for later use. It also ensures that you have an extra option for feeding when you’re away from your little one!

There are so many types of breast pumps, so be sure to choose one that suits your needs. Most insurances will cover a breast pump per pregnancy. With everything from hospital grade pumps to wearable pumps available, shopping for a pump can get a little confusing. For more information on selecting the right pump, check out how to choose the right breast pump. I can help! Your registry can be a great way to get awearable option or secondary pump.

Car Seat and Travel System

A car seat (and a compatible stroller) is an absolute non-negotiable item on your baby registry. After all, it’s required to safely transport your baby in a vehicle, and hospitals won’t let you leave without one. But, just like a pump, don’t just pick anything. Find a car seat or travel system that fits your vehicle, lifestyle, budget, and preferences. Here’s a car seat finder tool to help you make the best choice!

Diaper Bag

Gone are the days of leaving your house with your phone and keys. Soon, every trip will feel like packing for a mini vacation. A diaper bag that fits your lifestyle will help you stay organized and make trips more practical and stress-free. Register for a diaper bag you know will be sufficiently functional, and that you like! You want to enjoy carrying it around!

Diapers and Wipes

Diapers and wipes are two essentials you absolutely can’t forget. Make sure you include a variety of diaper sizes on your list babies grow so fast! Do a little research before registering to choose diapers and wipes that fit your standards.

High Chair

High chairs aren’t a piece of gear you’ll need right away, but your baby will be eating solids before you know it! You’ll need a high chair of some sort once they start exploring foods beyond breastmilk or formula. Look for a high chair that’s adjustable, easy to clean, and fits your space.

Baby Clothes

Your baby will need plenty of clothes including, onesies, sleepers, and climate-appropriate outerwear. Be sure to register for a variety of sizes, because your baby will outgrow clothes very quickly. And, don’t forget to consider the season for each size range!

Baby Bouncer or Swing

A baby bouncer or swing can be really helpful for soothing your baby and providing them with an enriching activity while you get a few minutes without a baby on your hip! Research bouncers or swings that fit your budget and space there’s a lot out there to choose from.

Safe Sleep Products

Safe sleep is critical for newborns. That means baby needs to be in his or her own crib or bassinet. It also means that your baby will need to be without a blanket until at least one, so opt for a swaddle (and eventually a sleep sack!) to keep them cozy and warm without the added risk. I’m also a big fan of baby sleep monitors, like the Eufy, to alert you if anything goes wrong while your little one is snoozing.

Baby Bathing Essentials

Baby bathtubs, gentle baby soap, and towels are all helpful for baby grooming! Using the sink or towels you already have is possible, but these items make bathing truly hassle-free.

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor is an essential item to ensure that your baby is safe while sleeping in another room. It provides peace of mind so you can hear or see your baby when they need you!
