10 Tips for Exclusively Pumping Moms

Exclusive Pumping: The Underrated Feeding Method That Deserves a Standing Ovation

Breastfeeding and formula feeding always seem to steal the spotlight — like the Beyoncé and Taylor Swift of newborn feeding. But there’s a third path that deserves WAY more love: exclusive pumping (EPing). This feeding method basically means your baby gets breast milk straight from a bottle instead of straight from the boob… kind of like DoorDash, but make it lactation.

There are so many legit reasons a mom might choose to exclusively pump. Maybe baby refuses to latch, maybe you need your partner to handle some nighttime feeds, or maybe breastfeeding just wasn’t vibing with your spirit (or your nipples). EPing lets you give your baby that liquid gold and keep your sanity intact.

But let’s be honest: signing up for the exclusive pumping life? No joke. It’s giving “set-an-alarm-every-2-hours-even-when-you’re-exhausted” energy. EPing requires dedication, discipline, and the emotional strength of a Marvel superhero. Newborn sleep deprivation alone is enough to take down even the strongest moms — and then you’re expected to pump on top of it?

BUT… with the right prep and support, exclusive pumping can also be incredibly rewarding. You get to nourish your baby with the perfect food for their tiny body while still protecting your mental health, your schedule, your boundaries, and your sense of bodily autonomy. That’s a win, mama.

So today, I’m breaking down my top tips for surviving — and thriving — as an exclusive pumping mom.

10 Tips for Exclusively Pumping Moms

In the beautifully messy, slightly chaotic reality of new parenthood, breastfeeding isn’t always possible or the right fit. That’s where exclusive pumping swoops in like the unsung hero it is.

Let’s make this journey smoother, lighter, and way less stressful.

What You Need to Know About Exclusively Pumping

How often should I pump when exclusively pumping?

Short answer? You and your pump are about to enter your “attached at the hip” era. Aim for 8–12 pumping sessions a day during those newborn weeks — every 2–3 hours, just like a nursing baby.

As your baby grows and their feeding patterns stretch out, you get to stretch out your pump sessions too. Eventually, you might pump every 4 hours instead of every 2–3. Growth for everyone!

Does exclusive pumping delay your period?

If you were formula feeding, your period would usually roll back in sometime between 6 weeks and 3 months postpartum (rude).
But frequent pumping can buy you a little extra time off — your body thinks baby is still feeding around the clock, so it delays fertility.

That said, every mom is different. Some EPing moms get their period back within a couple months. Others go 6+ months period-free. Consider it postpartum roulette.

Does exclusive pumping provide the same benefits as breastfeeding?

Yup! Pumped milk is still liquid gold.
Your baby gets the same incredible nutrition and immune benefits whether the milk comes from the boob or a bottle.

There are tiny differences because nursing involves direct saliva-to-nipple communication (science is wild), but pumped milk is still absolutely amazing.

Does breast milk change when exclusively pumping?

Direct breastfeeding has that cool “biological feedback loop” where baby’s saliva tells your body exactly what they need. Pumping doesn’t have that feature — it's more of a “one size fits most” situation.

But don’t stress: pumped milk is still nutrient-rich, immune-boosting, and phenomenal for your baby. You’re still giving them the VIP milk experience.

Benefits of Exclusive Pumping

Let’s hype you up for a second:

  • You get your own predictable feeding schedule instead of cluster-feeding marathons.

  • Partners and caregivers can actually help with feeds (hallelujah).

  • You always know exactly how many ounces baby got — no guessing games.

  • You avoid formula shortages and save money.

  • You can work, nap, travel, shower (!!!), or just exist without worrying that your supply will tank.

Exclusive pumping might be tough, but it’s also wildly empowering.

How to Exclusive Pump Like a Pro

Create a Special Pumping Space

Make a cozy pumping nook — comfy chair, water bottle, snacks, charger, pumping pillow, hands-free bra, all the things. Add a playlist or podcast that gives you life. If you’re going to be there 8–12 times a day, it might as well be cute.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration = milk.
Aim for around 16 cups of water a day. Yes, it sounds like a lot. Yes, you’ll pee constantly. Yes, it helps your supply. Worth it.

Pump Consistently

Treat your pumping schedule like a tiny, needy newborn that never stops demanding attention. Consistency keeps your supply steady and helps avoid clogs or mastitis (aka, the villains of pumping).

Wash Your Pump Parts

I know. It’s the worst part of pumping.
But clean parts = safe milk. Hot soapy water or a dishwasher cycle with heated dry works great.

Use the Right Flange Size

Flange sizing matters so much. Too big or too small and your nipples will be writing angry complaint emails. Use my free flange ruler if you’re unsure.

Stick to a Pumping Schedule

Aim for 8–10 sessions every 24 hours.
Plan for about 20 minutes per session.
You are officially a professional milk-making machine.

Use a Pumping App

Keeping track of pumping without an app is basically doing calculus while sleep-deprived. I love the Huckleberry app — log sessions, track output, set reminders, and let your brain rest.

Build a Support System

Don’t do this alone. EPing can feel incredibly isolating, so let people help.
Partners, family, friends — let them feed, burp, wash, or simply hold the baby.
And if you need your virtual mom village, join The Pump Squad. We get it.

Have Backup Tools

Things WILL break, disappear, or get milk spilled all over them.
Have at least 1–2 spare sets of pump parts ready to go.
Newborn chaos demands backups.

Read the Manual

Truly — the manual is your friend. Your pump has settings and features that can save your nipples, your supply, and your sanity. Understanding your pump = better output.

You’re Doing an Incredible Job

Exclusive pumping is hard. Like, REALLY hard.
It’s emotional, physical, and sometimes wildly frustrating — and any guilt you feel about not nursing directly is understandable… but unnecessary.

You’re feeding your baby. You’re showing up every day. You’re doing something unbelievably selfless and demanding.

That makes you a hero.
