The Ultimate Guide on How to Use a Breast Pump

Discover how to use a breast pump like a pro with step-by-step guidance, expert tips, and real mom advice for comfortable, efficient, stress-free pumping.

Whether you’re heading back to work, dreaming about a hot post-delivery date night, or simply desperate for a couple kid-free hours where no one touches you, having a good breast pump on standby is non-negotiable. It helps keep your milk supply steady and prevents that “my boobs are about to explode” engorgement situation we all dread.

But let’s be honest: pumping is the ultimate love-hate relationship. On one hand, it’s kind of magical that a little machine can pull milk out of your body so you can feed your baby later. Like… could you imagine if our ancestors had this tech? Caveman moms would’ve been living their best lives — whether they were combo feeding or exclusively pumping.

On the other hand? Figuring out how to use a pump is basically an Olympic event. Raise your hand if you’ve ever strapped yourself in and immediately thought, “What fresh chaos have I gotten myself into?” Between the flanges, the tubing, the weird suction patterns, and the constant fear of spilling milk… it’s a whole journey.

Which is exactly why I’m here. To be your breast friend (yes, pun aggressively intended) and give you the real, honest truth about pumping. As a mom who has wrestled with every pump under the sun, I’m here to walk you through how to use your pump and how to get the absolute most out of it. You don’t have to figure this out alone — I’ve got you!

The Ultimate Guide on How to Use a Breast Pump

Using your breast pump effectively is equal parts science and art. Follow these steps, and you'll be pumping away stress-free in no time:

Step 1: Get Your Gear Ready

Having all your pumping supplies neatly organized and within reach is key to a smooth, stress-free pumping session. Lay out your pump motor, bottles or milk collectors, flanges (the cone-shaped breast shields), tubing, power cord, if applicable, and any other accessories your particular pump requires-do NOT forget those duckbills. Also, ensure that you wash your hands with soap and that all the gear is clean. Use my free flange ruler to help you measure!

Step 2: Make Sure Your Flanges Fit

Ah yes, flanges — the tiny plastic funnels that can either make your pumping session magical… or make you want to throw your pump out the window. Getting the right flange size is everything. Too small and you’re dealing with clogged ducts, blisters, and nipples that feel personally offended. Too big and your nipple is basically doing the Slip ’N Slide inside the tunnel.
Get sized properly, mama — your boobs will thank you.

Step 3: Get Into a Comfortable Position

Listen, posture matters. Pumping while hunched over like a gremlin? Not the vibe.
Settle into a cozy chair where you can actually relax your shoulders and breathe. A glider or recliner is fabulous, but a cushy, supportive chair absolutely works too.
And pro tip from one mom to another: go pee first. Nothing ruins a pumping session faster than realizing halfway through that your bladder is waging war.

Step 4 (Optional): Massage Your Breasts

This step is totally optional, but some moms swear by it. If it helps you — amazing. If not — skip it without guilt.
Before you hit that start button, you can gently massage or compress your breasts to encourage letdown. Warm compress? Lovely. Light circular motions toward the nipple? Chef’s kiss. Think of it as giving your boobs a pep talk before the main event.

Step 5: Start Pumping

Pumping looks intimidating at first — like assembling a tiny milking robot — but I promise it becomes second nature fast.
Start with low suction, then increase as your milk begins to flow. Most electric pumps switch into expression mode automatically once letdown happens.
Pump until the milk flow slows way down — usually around 15 minutes.

Step 6: Adjust Speed and Suction

Here’s your permission slip to play around with the settings. Seriously — adjust away.
Your “perfect suction level” can change depending on the day, your hydration, hormones, mood, moon phase… you get it.
Find the balance where it’s effective but not painful. Pumping should not feel like your nipples are being sucked into another dimension.

Step 7: Wrap Up

Once you're done — congrats! — get that milk chilled right away. Breast milk can sit out at room temperature for up to 4 hours, but after that it needs to go into the fridge.
Refrigerated milk lasts up to 4 days; anything older than that should be frozen. Frozen milk sticks around for 6–12 months depending on your freezer.
And please, label everything. Future-you will be so proud when your freezer stash is organized and not a chaotic guessing game.

Breast Pump Settings Explained

One With The Pump’s Tips for Using a Breast Pump

Pumping can seem daunting with all the parts, accessories, and techniques involved. But having the right tips and tricks up your sleeve can make it a total breeze. Let's get into it!

Invest in Milk Storage Bags

Look for milk storage bags specifically designed to withstand freezing and prevent contamination. Also, clearly label the bottles or bags with the date before storing them. Most breast milk can last 6–12 months frozen!

Use Pump Cleaning Wipes

Having to wash pump parts after every single session is such a time suck. That's why pump cleaning wipes are a total lifesaver, especially when you're pumping on-the-go. You can use them for a quick clean of flanges, connectors, and bottles between uses when you don't have access to soap and hot water. Just let everything fully air dry before reassembling.

Invest in a Wearable Pump

Wearable, hands-free pumps have been a revolutionary innovation for making pumping way more convenient. These sleek, discreet devices simply slip into your bra and use gentle suction to collect your milk as you go about your day. You can attend meetings, run errands, and more without being tethered to a wall outlet.

Set Reminders to Pump

As a new parent, remembering to pump at regular intervals can easily slip through the cracks. Set recurring alarms or calendar reminders on your phone for pumping sessions.

Stay Hydrated, Eat Well, and Add Protein to Your Diet

You're making food for an entire human being, and that's some serious hard work! So, how can you fuel your body? First, adequate hydration is key for keeping your supply strong. As well as a healthy, well-balanced diet full of protein. To help yourself accomplish this, have a big water bottle on standby during pumping sessions, don't skip meals, and overall, just don't stress. The most important thing to remember is that you need energy to pump. Water, well-balanced meals, and protein can help you accomplish just that!
